Stone and Stream
Stone and Stream
Choreographed by Oliver Russell in collaboration with the dancers
“The rock’s strength is shaped by the stream that flows around it.”
Stone and Stream explores the relationship between structure and freedom. The stone is steadfast and grounded, embodying discipline, tradition, and the weight of lineage. It represents form, the Bunhae, carefully honed Hyung patterns, and the philosophical principles of Tang Soo Do.
In contrast, the stream is fluid, responsive, adaptive, and ever-changing. It bends without breaking, flows around obstacles, and moves with intention and freedom. The stream reflects lived experience—combat, improvisation, and the creative spirit of dance—emerging from live sparring drills and the dialogue between bodies.
Together, stone and stream form a dance of harmony, revealing that discipline and adaptability, structure and freedom, form and formlessness are not opposites, but complementary forces.
